How to Clean a Custom Knife
A custom knife is one of the most fragile yet durable knives you will own. The wide array of materials that your custom knife may come into contact with makes it important for your knife to stay in pristine condition and is ready to use the next time you do any cutting. Here are some tips to properly care and handle your custom knife.
Through careful handling of your custom knife, you can extend its life and prevent any accidental and severe damages. When not in use, keep it in a box and use a small adhesive tape to close the box. Don’t ever attempt to touch with your fingertips the knife’s edge. When you want to cut something, start cutting at the edge of the knife.
When you finish using your knife it is good habit to clean the entire knife and the blade and let it dry before putting it back into its sheath. Even corrosion-resistant blades can cause steel to oxidize with prolonged exposure to various elements.
There are some chemical solvents that are for sale that are perfect for cleaning custom knives. You can easily buy them from different local stores. Other alternatives that can be used in cleaning are acetones, alcohol, nail polish remover, and paint thinner are good for the blade. Just be careful in using these solvents as they may damage the blades when over used.
Do not clean your custom knife with harsh detergents that have Chlorine content because this can accelerate corrosion of the steel blade. Also avoid immersion in solvents, water, etc. This can be detrimental to the metal blades and handle of the knife.
When you use the custom knife for food products, wipe first the blade with alcohol to make it clean or you can wash it with soapy water and rinse the soap clean. Always remember to place lubrication in your knife after you used it for food. Keep the knife in a dry area not in a place with humidity to prevent it from getting moist and rusty.
