Collecting knives has several benefits and whether you want to build a collection that you can keep within your family or if you want to keep them in good condition then trade them off for a larger profit, it’s important to keep them in pristine condition if they’re going to be worth anything. Now, depending on what types of knives are in your collection, you may have to care for them differently. However, one general rule of thumb is to keep them moisture free and make sure you don’t leave any finger prints on the blade.

What Finger Prints do to the Blade

When you touch the blade of your knife, you’re leaving behind oils that will tarnish it. If you do touch the blade of your knife, you want to wipe it down with a soft cotton cloth until the finger prints are gone. If you’re concerned regardless, then you can invest in a wax that will serve as good blade protection. Ask your knife distributor if they can recommend any specific type or brand of wax.

Caring for your Folding Pocket Knives

If your collection has a few folding knives in it, then you should know that they require more care than your other blades. Aside from storing the knives as well as any leather sheaths you have in a moisture free environment, you want to occasionally use mink oil on the leather to keep it limber.

Other Tips for Folding Knives:

  • Keep the locking device free of any debris.
  • Occasionally place a few drops of oil in the joints to keep it opening and closing smoothly.
  • Regularly sharpen your knives by using sharpening steel.
  • If you’re not capable of sharpening your own knives, take them to a professional.
  • Do not sharpen your blades on a grinding wheel.

If you’re not sure of the value of your knife collection, take any blades you’re concerned about to a professional and if it’s vintage, they’ll be able to tell you how to clean it properly. When you’re caring for your handcrafted collection, just remember: Conservation and preservation.
