Custom knives are usually made from a metal of higher quality than ordinary commercial knives. There are a few different types of material used for a custom blade. Most of them are steel. Yet, there are other materials available, such as alloy, but they are rare and usually made for specific purposes. In general, there are a few types of material which are commonly found and which are the some of the best materials for knife blades.
Alloy steel
This type of steel can be divided into low and high alloy steels. Only high-alloy steel is used for knife production. Furthermore, this material is commonly found in larger knives and even swords. It is known for being very hard and being able to resist humidity and corrosion. It is rare to find a knife made from this material, but if you do, chances are high you can use that knife for a long period of time.
Stainless steel
Although ordinary steel is still found in knives made today, it is rare among custom knives. Stainless steel is far more common and a much better alternative. The reason is its strength and resistance to the elements. These blades will last for a long period of time and are extremely hard.
These are not to be confused with semi-stainless steel blades. The material in these has a lack of certain elements, usually chromium. Obviously, the pure stainless steel is the best option for custom folding knives and other types.
Super Stainless Steel
This type of steel is special as well. It is used for knives which are made to be used underwater or where humidity is high. They are far more resistant to corrosion and the elements than any other type of steel. The reason for that is in the elements found in this type of steel. We can see materials such as titanium, nickel, vanadium and more. In essence, the chemical mixture of elements is more complicated than the one found in ordinary or semi-stainless steel blades.
In addition, these knives are developed for use in aggressive situations, where tough resistance of the blade is mandatory.

Carbon Steel
Nowadays, carbon steel is more than just popular in knife production, it is also incredibly useful. It is a different material than stainless steel, due to the fact that it exhibits a lack of chromium. However, this makes the blades sustainable to corrosion. On the other hand, there are a few advantages. The carbide in the knives is also found in iron and it allows the blades to stay sharper for a longer period of time without the need to sharpen them. This material also makes knives sharper than those made from stainless steel and easier to sharpen when needed.
