Argentina has become one of the most exciting places in the custom knife world, and Random Knives is one of the shops there I watch most closely. It is a two man operation, and they forge their own Damascus. That alone puts them in different company from most makers at their price level.

What Random Knives Makes

What I have carried from them includes hunters and fighters with san-mai blades: a hard steel core forged between softer outer layers, which gives a fine cutting edge, a tough blade, and a visible line where the steels meet. Their handle work deserves a mention too. Micarta scales inset with pins and carefully sculpted to the hand, and desert ironwood, which is their wood of choice and a very good one.

More recently they have started making folders, including slipjoints with blades of their own Damascus. The first one I handled was bold, with a very good walk and talk, which is the feel and sound of the blade opening and closing. Folders are a different discipline from fixed blades, and getting that right early is a good sign.

Why I Carry Them

There is a real gap in the custom market between factory knives and the established names whose pieces start in the thousands. Random Knives sits right in it. You get hand forged work, their own steel, and honest fit and finish at a fair price, which makes them one of the best ways I know to start a custom collection. Argentina also produces CAS knives, and if you like what the Sobral brothers are doing, Random Knives is worth a look at a gentler price.
