The concept of investing has steadily gained popularity among those who are not involved in finance. Investment was once a term that only the elite, wealthy, financially wise, or elderly were familiar with. As with all things, the internet has proven to be an equalizer in terms of access to knowledge, and apps have allowed anyone to get started in the standard markets to help foster a mindset of investing.

Due to this, several things have come into the limelight as potential investing objects—a great example would be the revival in popularity of various trading cards. That brings us to the question, what about rare collector’s knives?

Is Knife Collecting Lucrative?

We like to pretend that money is no object, but to ignore the role of money in any endeavor is simply dishonest. At Exquisite Knives, we would never recommend someone start collecting simply for the sake of monetary gain—you won’t last anyways! More on that later…

But is it lucrative? The answer is, like all things related to investment, maybe.

Almost anything can be lucrative if you make the right choices, hedge the right bets. That’s not how probability typically works, though. If it did, making money would be easy.

Plenty of people owned a Loveless knife before it was even a “Loveless knife”, it was just a good knife. Naturally, as his fame and stature grew so too did the demand for his product. If you know anything about making knives, a good custom knife takes quite a bit of time to make. There’s good, and then there’s Loveless. It is said that by the time of his death, getting a knife from him would take 2-3 years.

By the time a knife is worth “something”, it also costs quite a bit to acquire it in the first place. This means if you’re serious about knife collecting as a hobby and would at least like to be fiscally aware of your collection’s value, understand that the knives that are worth the most also require some capital to acquire and hold onto until they peak in value.

What Knives Will Accrue Value?

This is the golden question. How do you know which knives, which knife makers will be worth something in the coming decades? To know this, you’d have to be a psychic. The next best thing is passion and belief. Remember how we said earlier that knife collecting for pure monetary gain is pointless? That is why. If you can’t appreciate that which you are collecting, in most instances you will make the wrong choice every time.

If you’re truly in tune with what makes a knife well-crafted or beautiful in contrast to what is already out there, you will be able to more easily identify those knives in the wild and pounce on them.

Even good choices—good investments take time to mature, what are you going to do with a bunch of knives that you purchased believing they would go up in worth? They’ll sit in a drawer somewhere as dead weight. There’s no sure fire way to know which up and coming knife makers will be worth multiple times their current value over, and so only passionate collectors who can appreciate what they’re holding onto will enjoy every step of the process.

The alternative is to invest in already established names.
